Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Essential Fatty Acids

چکیده
Erik von Elm PLoS Medicine now encourages translations in languages other than English; this decision can only be welcomed. German-speaking readers are pleased by the novelty of a PLoS title written in their language. The Editorial starts with the fi rst line of the well-known German poem “Lorelei” by Heinrich Heine (1797–1856) [1]. This year commemorates the 150th anniversary of his death. Originating from Germany, Heine was an early European citizen and a mediator between cultures. After traveling through Europe for years, he settled down in Paris. There he wrote the “Lorelei” and other poems in German while his essays in French made German literature known to the francophone public. In Heine’s time, the question which language would prevail in science was yet undecided. In the 19th and the early 20th centuries pivotal works in different disciplines were published in languages other than English, as evidenced in the biographies of the Nobel Prize laureates (http:⁄⁄nobelprize.org). It seems that insuffi cient knowledge of the one foreign language did not impede an academic career at that time. Today, profi ciency in English is a luxury for many users of scientifi c information, as pointed out in the Editorial. The same is true for the non-anglophone researchers, who invest time and money in English courses only to try to communicate with their anglophone peers on equal linguistic terms. Can scientifi c journals do more to overcome the existing language barriers in the meantime? Sure, they can allow the translation of their papers in other languages. But would they also trouble to employ smart machines or humans in order to translate a manuscript written in one of Heine’s languages into English before sending it out for peer review? By the way, an English translation of the “Lorelei” is available at http:⁄⁄www.usd.edu/eric/deutsch/literatur/ projekt/works/heine-lorelei.html.

The essential nature of n 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in neurological development Neural membrane aminophospholipids are characterized by high concentrations of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), particularly docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3). For example, adult human cerebral cortex phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) contains 30.5% C22:6n-3 while C22:6n-3 in the retina accounts for 22.2% of PE...

Background: About 40 thousand newborns are delivered annually with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). It induces serious CNS complications. Methods: In a review of, the word “fetal alcohol syndrome” was searched in PubMed and Google Scholar and the retrieved articles were summarized. Results: Many studies showed that alcohol can cause more defects in fetus than heroin, cocaine and marijuana. The pos...
متن کاملCharacterization of Fatty Acid Composition in Eurasian Badger (Meles meles)
Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PuFAs, lA and AlA) are not synthesized in mammals in the absence of their essential fatty acid precursors. however, hibernating animals and animals sleeping through the winter need sufficiently high amounts of these acids. The eurasian badger does not hibernate, but sleeps over winter. In the autumn the body weight of adult badgers increases even twofold, since they...

BACKGROUND Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), alcohol-related birth defects (ARBDs), and alcohol-related neurodevelopment disorders (ARNDs) in neonates are often the result of maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Facial characteristics are associated with FAS, but ARBDs and ARNDs are more difficult to diagnose. Fetal exposure to alcohol can cause central nervous system dysfunction, pre- an...

The effects of the use of essential oil of Rosmarinus officinalis on the chemical quality and fatty acids of fish fillets of Ctenopharyngodon idella were investigated during frozen storage at -18 ºC for 6 months. Fish fillets were divided into three groups; the control (C) without rosemary essential oil, the second group with 0.2 % rosemary essential oil (A) and the third with 0.4 % (v/v) rosem...
